Description

After promulgation of the Constitution, the Kenya National Integrated Civic Education (KNICE) Programme (under the then Ministry of Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs) was initiated to provide civic education on the Constitution. This curriculum, trainers manual and handouts were prepared to provide for focused civic education on devolution and public participation to ensure that the citizens and public officers effectively participate and facilitate the entrenchment of the new governance structure.

The manual is intended facilitators of Civic Education as it provides useful information on how to successfully implement the Civic Education Curriculum. It is a 13-week programme. The manual comprises of an introduction that gives general information on how to carry out the training and three modules where several units are discussed. In each unit and subsequent sessions, topic specific objectives, suggested learning methods, assessments and resources and key notes are provided. A brief introduction to the unit and in some units additional information is included to equip the facilitator with the necessary information they require to know to effectively facilitate the sessions. The learning methods and assessment are suggested to give the facilitator opportunity to use their innovativeness and creativity to use any other method they see fit for their situation. Each module in the training manual contains an introduction, general objectives, unit introduction, specific objectives, time, suggested training methods, suggested learning activities, suggested teaching resources, suggested assessment methods, key notes and additional information. This makes the training manual user friendly for the civic educators and trainers.

These materials have been developed to train Kenyan citizens on the provision of the constitution in the endeavour to equip them with desirable knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and competencies for effective participation in governance processes both at national and county levels. This user friendly curriculum for the civic educators and trainers is expected to guide in the provision of continuous and harmonized Civic Education.
